INNER UNIT + OUTER UNIT
The inner vs. outer unit is a key concept to our approach to training and recovery. The basic concept is that the Inner Unit stabilizes the body, whereas the Outer Unit moves the body. Each muscle in the body has a different percentage of muscle fiber types, which makes them predominantly inner unit or outer unit in their function. These muscle fiber types need to be trained differently from each other, and most of the fitness and sport communities focus a lot on the outer unit, leaving the inner unit undertrained and therefore out of balance. Without a sufficient inner unit, our athletes are prone to acute and chronic injury. This concept is literally why I left CrossFit. CrossFit is not dangerous, but most athletes who train using only the CrossFit system are very outer unit dominant, resulting in muscle tension and pain, injury, inefficient movement patterns and compensations, and postural issues.
